How I Blindly Stumbled Through My First Yoga Teacher Training

It’s been 10 years since the first time I started thinking about taking a yoga teacher training program. At the time, yoga was nowhere near as popular as it is now and I remember signing up for a teacher training not even knowing there were different kinds of yoga out there! I was going through a major shift in life and although I loved yoga, I wasn’t sure if it was even logical to think of teaching it as a career.  I had so much uncertainty and so many questions that no one seemed to know how to answer.  The teacher training was about as expensive as a semester of university but I didn’t know if the credentials I would receive from the training were actually legitimate; would I be able to get a job right out of YTT school?

Nevertheless, I dove in and started the training. In the beginning, I was worried that I hadn’t practiced enough or read enough books on yoga. Lots of people in my training were clearly way stronger and more experienced than I was!  The program I took was 9 months and I (thank goodness) absolutely loved it. I’ve been teaching yoga now as a full time career for 8 years and wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.  However, now that there are so many YTT options out there, I see that students may benefit from a little bit of support in the preparation for their training.  This is what I hope to create through our brand spankin’ new website, Yoga Teacher Prep.

If you’ve done your training, I’d love to hear about your first time. And, if you’re staring this decision in the eye, I’d love to help you – tell me what your biggest hang up is! We’ve created a contact form for all of this feedback. Can’t wait to hear from you.
