One of the greatest assets to understanding yoga is to learn yoga from the roots up. Look for a training that can take you into the transformational wisdom that comes through studying yoga philosophy. Hatha yoga, the yoga of the body, is only one path. To have a strong foundation in the other main pathways of raja, jnana, bhakti, and karma yoga will give you the gift of understanding the mind, the spirit, love and compassion towards yourself and others. Go deep, and learn more than just the poses, and your yoga journey will blossom beyond belief!

Something we rarely learn in drop-in yoga classes is the philosophy, theory and history of yoga. A great yoga teacher training program will include all of the above. Like Mugs says, this is important because it will inform our understanding of yoga and give us the opportunity to learn where yoga came from.
